I know these aren't the best out there(far from it) I just want to buy my son a basic Home Theatre reciever.

The Sony:

The Yamaha: http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=552126&CTID=5000400&ATRID=1000&DETYP=ATTRIBUTE

He told me he's gonna mostly listen to music on it, he wants clean sound, and low frequencies for his subwoofer.

Thanks.

  1. Go with the Yamaha.

The Sony "ES" line is actually well respected, but Sony makes a lot of space-filling receivers and this one looks like a low-end unit.

Yamaha tends to be rock-solid and even the low end receivers tend to be decent.

  2. I own a Yamaha and am completely satisified with its capabilities and usability in addition to Yamaha's customer support. The only other brand I would consider would be Denon for its quality.

Remember the receiver is only half the picture. Quality speakers make up the other half. You can buy the best most expensive receiver but don't skimp on the speakers. Go with as much as your budget will allow.

  3. Hi mate, again!  The Yamaha is my first choice. I used to own a Yamaha Pre-Amplifier which i was very satisfied with. For some reason Sony Receivers are not popular with home theater enthusiasts.Yamaha, i am told,  has a better sound for music. If your son is only going to listen to music ,a Stereo Integrated Amplifier will sound much better than a Receiver.

    Regards,Rob.
