I know some such as gardai (not sure whether it means police or policemen, though) or taoiseach for prime minister. But I would like to know the ones you really need to know to speak with Irish people.

  1. do you mean to speak to the people that speak the Irish language ,other than that there are no other word's you need, the rest of the country speak the english language

  2. hi i'm irish and there aren't really any to be honest

  3. Just call the police the guards. There are no real words you need to know.

  4. Hmmm, I think you will find that most Irish persons speak English.

  5. Here are a few Irish words which are used on a daily basis in Ireland, but I suggest that you might have as much trouble with the English which is spoken in Ireland as well, so the two sites below will help you with that.  Some words we use unconsciously not realising that they are in the Irish language, but don't be afraid to ask for an explanation, or to use your own words for them, we are fairly cosmopolitan and know what you mean.

    Garda (singular) (gar-da) Policeman/woman

    Gardai (plural) (gar-dee) Police

    Sláinte (slawn-che) Cheers.

    Gaeltacht (gale-tockt) Irish speaking area

    Poitín (putch-een) Ilegal home brew

A pair of  brógs: A pair of shoes

    Craic: A good time

    Amadán: (om-i-dawn) Fool

    Slíbhín: (sleeveen) Sly person

    Taoiseach (tee-shok) Prime minister

    Tánaiste (taw-nish-ta) Deputy prime minister

    The Dáil: The government House

T.D (Teachta Dála): A Government Deputy

On toilets (bathrooms):Fir (feer) Men, Mná (m'naw) Women

On public buses in Dublin: An lár (on lar) The city centre

    Bótharín  (bo-reen) Narrow road, laneway

(Go Raibh Maith Agat) (gura maw a-gut) Thank you

And one that some Irish people will try to teach you for fun, telling you it means something else:

Póg mo thóin: (pogue m' hone) It means (kiss my behind) So don't let anyone fool you.

  6. Erm none really.
