Question:

Which Is Less Damaging?

I have to dye my grey roots approx every 3 to 4 weeks. Currently I'm using light brown hair dye. My hair is dry like dead grass. Would dark brown hair dye be less damaging?

Thanks

  1. ~~Your hair may be very porous and it grabs the color which can further dry your hair. I have the same problem and here it how I fixed it.

Get a great shampoo and conditioner (I highly recommend Biolage for it's purity and your hair will fill like new in no time). Also get a good deep weekly deep conditioner, I like olive oil warmed slightly, rubbed into hair, wrap with a towel and leave on 30 minutes). Rinse well and then I leave the residue in all night and wash in the morning. Most important thing is if you color at home, apply a conditioner on the ends of your hair prior to applying the color. It keeps the damage from occurring if the dye gets on the ends. It won't affect the processing. This has been extremely helpful to me and has made a huge improvement. My hair looks so good now, and of course keep up with trims every 6 to 8 weeks.

  2. No: the colour part of the dye isn't what causes the damage. The damage is caused by the chemicals in the dye that open up the cuticle in your hair so the dye can get into the shaft. Unfortunately, regular dyes don't work unless the cuticle opens up, and you need a strong alkaline like lye to do that. (And of course henna doesn't stick well to damaged or grey hair, let alone both.)

Anyone who tries to sell you on expensive "natural" dyes is stringing you along - the "natural" dyes often contain exactly the same chemicals as the regular ones, only with different, less scientific-sounding names. Lye is, of course, 100% natural.

Since there's no way to improve the condition of hair that's already damaged, you might find it best to let your hair grow out, cut off the old growth, and use a semi-permanent dye (type 2) on the new growth. Grey hair tends to be more easily damaged by dye than brown hair, and semi-permanent dyes won't take well on already-damaged hair. If all else fails get some in-person advice from a good colorist who can look at your hair in person and give you expert advice.

  3. i think you should go to a salon and see a professional if your hair is that dry. they can give you a deep conditioning treatment and tell you the best hair dye to use.
