Question:

Which Is More Dangerous: The Navy or Air Force?

Honestly, I am a bit worried about the physical dangers of each military branch. I am currently in the Air Force ROTC in college to become an officer but am looking at the Navy, too.

Any thoughts?

  1. Neither of these is exceptionally dangerous unless you're a pilot.

  2. Our job is to protect. Since you are training to be an officer in ROTC - we expect you to be certain of yourself first. Do you promise to protect the United States of America? Will you lead with a fearless conscience? Can you perform under pressure, in a hostile area while aiding a ground force? If so - then please continue with your path to the Air Force or Navy. I only make those statements because, that will be your duty. Navy and Airforce deal with sea and air. I haven't heard any danger complaints yet. Follow orders, listen carefully, and execute the task at hand - you'll be fine.

If you got this far - then you can go even farther. Cross into the BLUE!

  3. Each branch has its own fair share of physical dangers. In the Navy you have various dangers according to your Specialty Code. If your assigned to a Carrier you have to worry about Prop and Jet Blast, pitching decks, bombs and other items. In the Air Force you have the same problems but in different ways, you still have Jet and Prop blast to worry about, bombs, fuel, and if your flying you have to deal with possible depressurization or faulty maintenance. Best advice, do research and choose what you want to do. Second best advice I can give you is this, don't go looking for the dangers, just keep them in mind and everything will be okay. I bet you don't think about the dangers of driving or riding in a car, train or airplane?

  4. Because the Navy provide all the major REMF support types (and the Docs) for the Marines, it tends to be more dangerous, at least in terms of the current wars.  The AF has far less presence in terms of ground combat operations, and the risk to AF flight types is low in the sort of action we've been seeing for the last five years or so.

  5. in the navy you spend months at a time stuck in a boat with little to know danger (still dangerous), but in the airforce you get to fly planes maybe, or be an engineer. you might not even leave the u.s., but it is still just as dangerous. just decide whether you want to fly when you die, or swim when you die.

  6. As in any branch of the military, there's jobs that are more dangerous than others.

From what I know, the AF is pretty safe unless you're a PJ or a Combat Controller.  Those are the hard-core jobs.  Some say that Forward Air Controllers are hard-core, but the ones I've worked as a Cav Scout were pathetic.  Not only could they not keep up, but Scouts are trained to do the same d**n job (call in air strikes)!  In addition, the AF is the country club of the military.

The same applies to the Navy as well.  Being a SEAL isn't too safe, but being a storekeeper or laundry service is.

But if you're THAT worried about being in harms way, I think you should really rethink a career in the military and work in the Boy Scouts or something.

  7. No military branch is completely safe, then again nothing in life is completely safe.

  8. navy, royal marine commando can be dangerous. hence all the hard **** training...
