  1. None of the LCDs get close to A Panasonic ore Pioneer plasma, but the closest sets will have to be the Sony Bravia XBR series, or the Samsung A750 LCD. I recommend the Pioneer Kuro that even surpasses the Panasonic Viera's performance.

  2. None of them can - the Panasonic Viera plasmas have far better motion resolution, deeper blacks and better color accuracy.

Add to that they can now go 100,000 hours at maximum brightness with a 100% white signal before they hit 50% output and you're looking at a TV that you could watch 10 hours a day with a white signal for 30 years before it gets dim enough to bother your viewing experience.

All the experts agree - plasma is where it's at.

  3. LCD's are getting closer to plasma picture quality, but they will never get the deep black level that a plasma can provide.

By the nature of the design, LCD's are back lit, allowing for light to interrupt a black pixel. (actually really dark grey)

Not all plasmas look deep black, but most can outperform a LCD in this area.

Sony XBR like another answerer mentioned, is one of the best along with Mitsubishi Diamond line and Samsung 7 series and up.
