  1. HI Zein,

I do the same type of photography and can recommend the lens that I really use most often.   I use the 70-210 telephoto zoom.  I love it for portraiture and it is really good for bringing in those beautiful and colorful landscapes.

I am sure other photographers have their favorites, but my own preference is the zoom.  I have been using the zoom from my very first portrait shot over 15 years ago.  Yes, I have used other focal length lenses,  but the zoom lets me back up / not crowd into my subject.   I can back up and get a full body or zoom into get a gorgeous headshot and everything in between.  Also and very important... when I need that bust shot or head shot...  by zooming all the way in,  it completely throws the background out of focus... which is what I want to minimize distractions and make my subject "pop".

    So, that is my choice.

  3. Do you have the Nikon D40, or the Canon EOS 40D?  In either case, for indoor portraiture, you might want to try a 50MM prime (fixed focal length) lens with a relatively low f-stop.  Here is a link to several Canon options ranging from about $100 to well over $1,000.  YOu can find very similar for Nikon.

For landscapes, you may want a wider angle lens.  They can be spendy, but will get you more dramatic landscape shots.

    God luck, and have fun.

  4. There are as many recommendations as there are responders.  None of them are quite there.  For landscapes you need a wide angle to get the vast picture of things, but for portraits, you will need a lens equivalent to more than a 105 (on 35mm format), perhaps even a 150.  I would not seek out a zoom to cover both as zoom have this basic problem, they are too slow for portrait work, and the movable element in a zoom actually brings the quality of the photograph down.

  5. I think the canon 24-70 2.8 would be a fantastic choice for you.  This lens is wide enough for landscape and more than sharp enough for portrait work.    The fact that the lens has an fstop of 2.8 makes it very valuable in low light/interior situations.  It is expensive, but one of the favorite lenses in my bag.
