You ought to try Thomas Rigby's, 23-25 Dale Street, Liverpool.  This is a fantastic pub for beers and has a great menu very well cooked with all the trad English stuff on it.  They even recommend an ale with each dish!

I went to Lark Lane a while back, and there was a pub that did a Sunday roast that was just like one I used to get when I was young. I've also had a nice one in The Philharmonic.
