Question:

Which Magic: The Gathering pre-constructed deck (any edition) is the best/most-playable right out of the box?

Pretty simple-

I have a good number of decks, and instead of thinking up a new deck, and buying the cards, and tweaking it, I would rather just get one of the pre-con decks from Tempest or later to play around with (maybe swap 2 or 4 cards out.) I'm looking for whichever deck is the most effective and most playable right out of the box- I don't care if this one certain deck comes with these 2 cards that are worth a lot of money or anything like that, I'm jsut looking for what has the most synergy and is fun to play. We usually play 2-4 people, so it can't be a really narrow deck either...

  1. Give the Elves vs. Goblins decks a try. Both are alot of fun and each is good enough to be played as is. They're the only decks I can think of that are suited for multiplayer games. Its easier to just make a multiplayer deck than buying a precon and hoping it'll hold out in a multiplayer game.

  2. The best standard would be warriror's code, it's fast and brutal.

  3. Um I would get the Rat's Nest pre con deck from Betrayers but thats only because it has Jitte in it which is extremely overpowered...

  4. The best I have found, and I play mostly theme decks, modified slightly, was Army of Entrophy, the Shadowmoor R/B -1/-1 counter themed Theme Deck.  Its contents are amazing, and looked like a dream play right out of the box.  I've only added a few commons/uncommons, and all of my friends are jealous of my deck.  As for the fact that they could have picked it up for $10?  Well, I'll keep that a secret...

  5. About the best preconstructed deck to have ever come out of MTG is the Arcbound deck from Mirroden.  it single handedly defined magic tournys until it cycled out (even after banning clamp).

Others have been good and some even powerful, but none of them had the ability of this deck.  I think it was bacisally 4 cards to swap out from the precon to the tourny deck.  Another thing about it is with just a bit of tweeking it can compete (not win mind you just compete) in jsut about every format of Magic from 1 to 1.5 to 2 (2 only counting when it was in cycle)  I dont think anything since PsychoTog had that ability.

  6. go for the "Going Rogue deck" from morningtide. It's extremely playable and easy to use. Also, it is very fast and kills your opponent quickly by card advantage and good cards like morsel theft.

Here's the "Going Rogue" decklist if you're interested:

  7. Hey this is what I do all the time when I want to play after not playing for awhile!  If you can get Precons from the early days, one of the best ones I have played with is either White Heat from Exodus, or The Plague from Urza's Saga.

I have actually won a tourney with White Heat, only swapping cards from one Exodus pack I bought.  Its fast with small white unblockable Shadow creatures and burn.

And The Plague is a combo deck in a precon!  Its fun dropping a Pestilence with everything you have protected from it, and killing off your opponent(s) and thier creatures with it!
