Question:

Which Martial Art Is Right For Me?

by  |  earlier

0 LIKES UnLike

-I am 14 years old

-5'4, 100 Pounds

-I want to know how to defend myself from others (you would realize why I would add this to my list if you have been to the area in which where I live, trust me)

-I want to defend myself from any sneak attacks or getting jumped (same reason as above)

-I also want to bulk up some muscle and get much stronger

-I don't want anything like Karate. I'm looking for something like Jiu-Jitsu or something.

-I want something that would look normal in a fight. I don't want anything like freaky or weird like Capoeira! I personally really dislike that one!

-I want something focused on punching/strikes, and takedowns and things like that. I don't want it to be something involving too much mental concentration, you know?

Please Help. I just want something that focuses on takedowns, and striking, so is there anything out there?

NO:

-Muay Thai!

-Kickboxing!

-Krav Maga!

-Karate!

-Kung Fu!

-Normal Boxing!

-Capoeira!

-Kendo!

Thanks so much for the help.

  1. Japanese Jiu-jitsu I'd suggest..

    Best wishes :)***

  2. I'm afraid to say that with your requirement's, you've eliminated all possibilities LOL.

Any defensive arts require mental concentration when you are learning.  Once you get to some level of ability, it becomes second nature to you, and you don't need to think about it when you act upon reflex and reaction.

Bulking up does not necessarily help you in a fight, if anything, speed is often reduced if you excessively gain muscle mass without the training to utilise the speed you can gain from it.  If you are in a fight, quite frankly, who will care what you look like?  If your purpose is to survive getting jumped in your neighbourhood, I don't think how you look should matter....

From what I have see/read/heard, brazillian ju-jitsu is a viable option if you like it, otherwise you've just said no to the other recommendable which is Krav Maga.....

    Good luck in finding something.

  3. I can understand your situations. The best that I can suggest you is NINJUTSU.

Ninjutsu is the Bigg Daddy of all Martial Arts. When you know it, you don't need to keep any kind of weapon with you when you have hands and legs.

It is the most lethal Martial Arts of the date. The other martial arts like Tae Kwon Do and Karate pay attention to beating up the enemy whereas Ninjutsu teaches you to disable the enemy by hitting him in a way that can cause him paralysis and even death. It also helps you to defend yourself from any assault.

East or West, Ninjutsu is the best!!!

  4. Im afraid Your all wrong, except for Kickbpoxing and MuayThai, that Ninjutsu Naruto BS needs to drop..now. You want to take MMA,Here is why. You become well rounded,In Striking and Grappling,Most MMA schools teach these,Kickboxing,Muat Thai (Similar striking) Judo,Submission wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (Grappling,BJJ has the best Grappling,Judo has amazing standup and Grappling) Sub wrestling is inbetween. My school Teaches Kickboxing,Judo,Sub wrstling and BJJ. Its broken into 4 days a week,Kickboxing is taught by the Owner who has done Kickboxing for 20 years or so,the Judo,BJJ and sub wrestling is taught by Master Dosanjos who has a Blackbelt in BJJ and Judo. and a 4 time all American. Look for a setup similar to mine, you will be well rounded

  5. Doesn't depend on the art dude, it depends on how much time and effort you put into it and if you have the right instructors.

But other than what you listed, look up Russian Sambo, you might like it.

  6. many arts fit that description. infact the first one that came to mind was okinawan karate. it isn't what you think.

if you want quick skills, that are simple and work. i really suggest muay thai or kickboxing. or even "normal" boxing.

but it seems to me you have your mind already made up. so just go learn jujutsu. but...what kind of jujutsu? classical (koryu) japanese jujutsu? brazilian jujutsu? judo? a modern equivalent?

first things first...it doesnt matter what anyone here says. second...the first thing you need to do is find out what schools are available to you. i can sit here and tell you to learn karate, or learn muay thai...but if there are no schools for that in your area..you can't very well learn them now can you? get a phonebook. the yellow pages. or go to

http://maps.google.com and type in your area...then type in self defense..or martial arts instruction.

  7. well to defend you self in a hurry take a self defence class. it doesn't matter which martial art you take it will take close to a year before you are good enough to defend your self.

  8. you seem very picky lol

kickboxing, muay thai, western boxing, and karate and wushu(some forms) are or can be very effective arts. many people whom are very able defendinf themselves CROSS TRAIN in those arts. but to be an all around good fighter and able to defend yourself in different environments you need good stand up/good takedown(defense)/ and good ground skills, and weapon disarming wouldnt hurt either. not too sure why you count out krav maga

anyways you wanna bulk up lift weights(which you only being 14 i dont recommend you do yet). martial arts will get you stronger to a certain extend but you wont really bulk up. you tend to gain a lot of muscular endurance though.

you said you want to focus on takedowns and striking. do you consider ground fighting a part of takedowns? if not and if you really want to ignore all those arts you just listed look into san shou or maybe escrima/kali.

if you want ground fighting too look into mma or sometimes self defense oriented brazilian jiujitsu will teach stand up along with takedowns and ground fighting but most of the time it focuses on ground work

anyways don't limit yourself i suggest cross training

  9. Actually, all the martial arts can help you to defend yourself and build up your muscle.

    Teakwon-do ITF (Internatianol Teakwon-do Federation), Wu-Shu, Wu-Do.

In their self-defence, containing takedowns, and striking. That is what I saw when pass by....

You will love 'them' when you get interest with any martial arts that you joint in.

Try your best. Just a sugesstion.
