Which Motorcycle would be best for me?

I am a beginner rider, keep in mind that a few weeks ago i couldn't ride a bicycle, now I am riding a bicycle to and from work almost everyday, so I'm trying to get a little experience with a two wheeled vehicle.

I know I want a cruiser, I don't want a bullet bike or a dirt bike or a scooter. But what should be the size of the engine and all that?

I walked into a dealership and a salesman recommended the Suzuki Boulevard C50, he said i should be more comfortable in that one, the engine was 750cc. I am about 6'4"so I guess that could be why I'd be more comfortable on a bigger bike.

But since I am a little less experienced should I look for a smaller bike? I don't plan to take any long trips, I may not even ride on the freeway, and if I do it probably won't be often. I'll just drive the bike to work and school, both of these trips are uphill so do i need a bigger engine?

I am a student on a budget, so I don't want something too extravagant, so if you anybody could point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

  1. It's a tough decision,  with your physical size you should look for a bike with forward controls,a 750 is a  big engine  for a beginner, but  the modern 250's will go 100mph, if you don't mind having your legs cramped then you should look for a 2009 ninja 250....these bikes rock........

  2. Alan,

I think it's a matter of trying a few bikes and see how you feel. You're a tall guy for a 250 so you need to sure you'll be comfortable in the saddle. These are still good bikes to start on, and most importantly, they won't scare you. There's a few nice little cruisers out there to choose from (eg. Honda VT250C, Yamaha XVS250) and you can't go far wrong. It may be that you'll outgrow the bike, but there's nothing wrong with that, and you'll have picked up some experience and gained a better idea of what might suit you.

Of course, you could start with something larger like the Boulevard, and they are a great bike - I've owned the M50. The only concern I have with the bigger bikes as a learner, is that they can sometimes be a bit daunting at first, and the last thing you want is to have your confidence dented early on. Many people have successfully gone down this path, though. Another issue for you may be that you might not ride enough to justify the extra dollars - but that's up to you.

Whatever you decide, remember that your first bike will almost certainly not be your last, so don't buy one thinking that it's the one!

  3. Ill answer this nice and short.

"The ideal starter bike for ANYONE"

    "Honda rebel 250"

  4. For your size between 600-750 cc's. If you are wanting more power anything over a 1000 cc's would be pushing it for a begginer.
