  1. Yes, try and read some reviews.

I agree it's a personal decision.  Many people are Puccini fans, so would plump for Tosca, then La Rondine.  (I've seen Tosca several times, and La Rondine once, which was nice but nothing to write home about.)

Personally, I'd always go for Verdi above Puccini.  I saw Otello at the Bolshoi in Russia, which was magnificent!

  2. In my opinion, "Tosca" has the best orchestration and arias. "Otello" requires a strong cast of singers such as the ones who have been dead for many years, so that would be out of the question for me. I would not recommend "La Rondine." Personally I would see "Tosca," but if I had the choice of others, which the house you'll be going to obviously isn't showing, I would rather see "Carmen" or one of Mozart's Italian operas. Try to see one of the others I mentioned another time if you enjoy the one you're about to see.

  3. Partly depends on the cast's ability: check reviews in newspapers, on-line.

I saw part of DVD of Otello with Placido Domingo doing a good job of being Black.  It's got a great plot, imo.

Tosca is often performed, so must be popular.  I would choose La Traviata if it were available:  makes me cry every time.

No personal info on La Rondine.

Hope this helps .. it's such a personal decision.
