I've narrowed my hotel search to a couple of hotels. i want something that's centrally located, within walking distance of all the sites, and near many cafes, shops, etc, and really in the heart of everything. Which of these two is better located for that? i put a link to a map for each.

-Academie Hotel Saint Germain-

-Hotel Sully Saint Germain-

also, is it better to stay on the 1st&4th arrondissement side of the Seine? or is this 5th&6th side better? if you have any better suggestions of where to stay then please say so! =)

  1. I have stayed in a few hotels in Paris and oddly enough my favorite is a the Best Western Eiffel. You can see the tower from the balconies and the hotel is centrally located.

I would not recommend staying in the area near Sacred Heart Cathedral. It's supposed to be an artsy community, but actually I found there to be a lot of shady characters instead of artists.

The areas you have chosen look fine to me.

  2. After a lot of research, I decided to stay in the 1er, right bank, just off Place Vendome, very near the Ritz (right around the corner) at Hotel Mansart.  My reasons were the same as yours AND I wanted large rooms, including the bathroom, A/C, lift, not too big a hotel, and very parisean (Louis XVI look and feel).  I got just what I was looking for at Hotel Mansart and the staff did everything and more to make us feel welcome and comfortable.  They made and confirmed all of my meal reservations within the first hour of arrival, speak English and were extremely nice to us.  We even got champagne on our anniversary and they had breakfast ready for us in the lobby the morning we left because it was very early and they wanted us to have something to eat before we left.  I highly recommend this hotel.  Exceeded our expectations BIG TIME!

  3. 4th arrondissement is the best, but the most expensive too, it's the older and must beautifull area , also the g*y place in paris !

  4. I seconded the Academie Hotel Saint Germain.  You can walk almost everywhere from this.  Easy to take the metro also.

  5. Between those two I'd pick the Hotel Sully Saint Germain.

the location of the rue des Ecoles puts you right in the heart of the student district in an area loaded with inexpensive places to eat and a lot of night time entertainment.
