I want to buy a parrot, and I want to get one that I can teach to talk, sing, etc. Which breed has the most capacity to learn, and the best voice? Price is not an issue.

  1. i would get and african grey parrot they are hilarious and they sound really clear when they talk.

  2. you should go to a parrot rescue in you area. i have one near me. its called the world parrot refuge. anyways, check out all the species there and see what ones are the sweetest and talk the most. when i went into the cockatoo room there was a chorus of hellos waiting for me, and they all fallowed me down the isle saying what are you doing, hey wazzup? or whats your name? it was very cute but cockatoos can get real loud. the amazons where the coolest with the most energy mimicking laughter and bouncing around like clowns. if i had the money, that would be the bird for me. the greys where ok... they mostly just sat there and made little sounds but none talked. the conure room was super loud aswell as the macaw room. lovebirds had the worst sound though. so high piched. i would go with a grey or amazon.

  3. African Grey

    Macaw

    Amazon

  4. I have a African Grey that was abused and mistreated for years. With love and affection he has become a wonderful pet. I have had many birds and find that these birds learn quick and they learn alot and speak more clear than any other I liken it to having a 2 -5 year old child in the house. Just have to go slow and earn their trust. Give them lots of toys and set ground rules from day 1. Good luck and enjoy whatever Parrot you get. :) kThey are all great in their own ways.

  5. any bird that has the ability to talk doesnt mean they will. there are plenty of parrots that are supposed to be good talkers that dont speak at all, it depends on the personality of the bird

  6. African Grey's are the best talkers, and the smartest

  9. The best talkers are African Grays and Amazon Parrots (Yellow Napes, Double Yellow Heads and Blue Fronts in particular).

African Grays can mimic with exact pitch and intonation.  (We had one in a shop I used to work at.  His cage was next to the phone and he would, periodically throughout the day, *ring* and then proceed through the entire recording on the answering machine  It was almost impossible to tell when the bird was ringing and when it was the phone.)  They do not carry a tune well.  These are intelligent, emotionally demanding birds and need a lot of attention and stimulation.  If they are not properly stimulated, they will self mutilate, usually by pulling out their own feathers.

Amazons are great talkers as well but they have a more "parrot-like" voice.  They are excellent singers - ours sings Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Deck the Halls all day long.  They can be a bit more temperamental but are not as emotionally demanding as a AG.  Ours does not like to be held but does want to interact with the family... this is fairly typical of Amazons.

Those are going to be the two primary birds that come up those most as suggestions.  When purchasing your bird, keep your lifestyle in mind.  A lonely gray is a bird that will be miserable.  An amazon might be able to keep himself better entertained but can be prone to moodiness in the Spring once he has matured.

    Good luck in your search.

  10. If you want a bird that talks and sings then you want a Double Yellow Head or Yellow Nape Amazon. Those are the best two talkers. I have all three. The African Grey is exceptional at mimicking sounds. They talk but they are not performers. The Amazons are performers. They want to be center stage when someone is around. When you want a Grey to talk he won't. They don't like an audience. They prefer a quite household where a Amazon likes to be where there is a log going on. Don't let anyone tell you that amazons can't mimic a persons voice. I have amazons that can fool my wife when they talk. It all depends on the bird. Some Grey's never talk. Most don't start talking until they are 1-11/2year old.  I have never seen a Yellow Nape or Double Yellow that wouldn't talk. Almost every baby Yellow Nape that I raise are talking by the time they are 8 weeks old.
