  1. a quiet leader

  2. A team needs the full gamut of players of all types.

The "yapper type" keeps the other players mind on the end result. Focused on the opposition. Darcy Tucker is probably the best at this.

The quiet leader that lets his actions speak louder than words. Sundin, Nieuwendyk, Yzerman spring to mind as these types.

The "gung ho let's do'er type" that jump to the front of the line and lead the team forward. d**n the torpedoes full steam ahead. Gary Roberts is this type.

Every dressing room needs some one to create some levity and to keep emotions out of the game. Wade Belak is one that always looks on the funny side of the game.

If most of my choices came from Toronto it's because I know these players best but other teams have the same types.

  3. The quiet one that leads by example and one that is like Steve Yzerman was...I still miss him =(

  4. Lead by example.  Mark Messier,  Mario Lemieux, Steve Yzerman, Ron Franchise, Gary Roberts.

  5. A quiet leader who knows when to joke, but knows when to take the game seriously. Although you don't want to necessarily have allegencies with your opponents having mutual respect is nice to have should things get "ugly".

  6. The type everyone has mentioned (leader by example) but also vocal. In my (limited) experience, leading by example only goes so far, eventually you have to speak up. A mix of the two would go a longgg way. Not necessarily a "rah-rah" guy but someone who can get the time fired up, someone who's not afraid to call out a teammate (respectfully) for mistakes. The Captain/Leader must practice what he's preaches, and preach what should be practiced. Otherwise the effectiveness is questionable. A guy like Mark Messier comes to mind only because I watched him game in and game out. He was the on ice and off ice leader. Giving the "C" to the teams best player (for no reason) is a trend that needs to stop IMO.

  7. a player that will lead the team and kick @$$

  8. The kind of player that takes action but gets along with the other players someone others respect.

  9. i would want someone i respect who takes the game seriously and will do whatever it takes to get the team in the right direction..i dont think the captain has to necessarily be the best player, as many assume. i just think it has to be someone that works hard, shows up for practice, and can get the job done.

  10. I would want someone who leads by example is able to get out their and score the goals, but also to set up the plays. Someone who would be able to keep the teams spirits up even if they were losing the game. A good example of this on Montreal would be Saku Koivu, on the leafs would be Jason Blake.

  11. The quiet leader. He gets it done night in and night out, and NEVER draws un-wanted attention to himself, or the team.

  12. The three qualities you just said were Ken Daneyko perfectly....he was one of the funniest guys in the locker room....spouted off sometimes one the ice but ultimately lead by example.....I'll take him with the spouting off Stevens and quiet leader Neidermyer back anyday
