Question:

Which Poker Hand Would Win?

I was playing texas hold-em the other day and the river was dealt and all bets were up. I had two pair and so did my opponent but my two pair was higher, but he claimed that he won the pot because his two pair came from his hand. Like;

Him (Q,Q) Me(K,7)

The river (K,8,8,A,3)

Im certain i shouldve won since my two pair was of higher value but he insisted that he won because he used both his cards and i had to use the river. Tell me who is right please?

  1. You won the hand, plain and simple, and he is a liar. 100 years ago you could have been justified in shooting him. Lol.

  2. Just in case you want to print up an official rule book:

  3. I agree with what's been said before - you won the hand.  The highest pair always wins, it doesn't matter which cards you use.

  4. Whew, must have been a private home game with no one who really was in control of the game, lol.

You won the hand! You had the higher two pair.

The winner is determined by the best five cards from your hand and the community cards. And the cards speak for themselves, no matter what someone says, the best five cards win using poker hand ranking. .

Keep a rule book handy in case this ever happens again, you can pick a cheap one up at any bookstore, or print one out on the internet.

    Good luck!

  5. Your friend is either lying to steal your money (some friend) or doesn't know how to play Texas Hold'em.

In Texas Hold'em, we ALWAYS play the best five cards, regardless of where they came from.

    So he had Q Q 8 8 A and you had K K 8 8 A.

It doesn't matter how many cards you played to make your hand, you still had the better hand.

The ONLY time it might matter if you use both your hole cards is if you are playing in a casino and they have a bad beat jackpot prize, and they specify that both players involved in the hand must play both their hole cards.  But this is certainly not an issue for ordinary Hold'em situations.

  6. Including your two hole cards and the five community cards, you make the best five card poker hand you can.  It does not matter where the cards come from.  Hope you weren't playing for money.  If so, you got conned.

  7. I think that you would have won, it should not matter that you had to use the community cards.

The whole point is to make the best 5 card hand you can using the two cards you hold and three cards from the community cards.

  8. He was either 1) lying his socks off, 2) completely oblivious to the rules of Hold'em or 3) confusing the rules somewhat with Omaha.
