  1. During the first days of his presidency in 1923, President Calvin Coolidge and his family were residing in a third-floor suite at the Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C.  In the early morning hours, the president awoke to see a cat burglar going through his clothes, removing a wallet and a watch chain. Coolidge spoke:  "I wish you wouldn't take that... I don't mean the watch and chain, only the charm. Read what is engraved on the back of it."  The burglar read: "Presented to Calvin Coolidge, Speaker of the House, by the Massachusetts General Court."  Coolidge then identified himself as the president, persuaded the burglar to relinquish the watch charm, led him into a quiet conversation, found out that the young man and his college roommate were unable to pay their hotel bill and buy train tickets back to their campus, counted out thirty-two dollars from the wallet (which the dazed young man had also relinquished), declared it to be a loan, and advised the student to leave (in order to avoid the Secret Service) as unconventionally as he had entered.

The episode was confided to only two friends, one of them Frank MacCarthy, a freelance writer, who wrote out the story fifteen years after Coolidge's death.  But Mrs. Coolidge preferred that it not be publicized.  Richard C. Garvey, a colleague of MacCarthy's, reconstructed the story and released it in 1982, long after all reasons for secrecy had vanished.  According to MacCarthy's notes, Coolidge stated that the young cat burglar repaid the loan in full.

Coolidge, John Calvin ["Silent Cal"] (1872-1933) American Republican politician, 30th president of the United States (1923-29) [noted for his strong support of business and his encouragement of stock speculation (which fueled the roaring '20s but led to the crash of 1929)].
