Which Presidential Candidate has a better track record for moving to the center to get things done?

It seems like to his own detriment within his party, McCain has moved to the center to get McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform passes, McCain-Lieberam Environmental Stewardship passed, and almost got McCain-Kennedy passed. I think he even was against the tax cuts unless it accompanied cuts in earmarks even though his party was running congress (in other words he'd only back tax cuts if his party lived under tighter spending on boondoggles.)

Conversely, Obama's reputation at voting against Illinois' Born Alive Infant Protection Act to appease the most radical elements of the pro-choice movement. Additionally he has been against offshore-drilling and has said he'd only back it if there were high taxes on gas. He has also refused to acknowledge any success in Iraq, and voted against every Bush judicial appointment....has OBAMA ever voted for something that was primarily considered a Republican issue?

  1. The Libertarian one.

  2. McCain has always tried to work with anyone to make progress in the gridlocked partisan congress.  He has a track record of getting things done, like you said, even to his own detriment.

Obama would never do anything that he wasn't told to do by his far-far-left liberal backers.  He's moved center now just to try to get votes, but he won't change his spots if he's elected.  He won't even be able to communicate with the moderates in his own party, let alone try to bring some type of harmony with the right.

  3. Most of my family are democrats but the truth is I think McCain is more in the middle. Obama has a poor record for most voting issues and would have a very hard time doing what is best for the country rather than his career I am afraid. McCain is known for working with both Democrats and Rebublicans and even liberals when necessary. He seems to just want to get the jobs done.

  4. McCain is clearly in the center, even thinking about putting Joe Lieberman on the ticket has the far right of the Republicans in an uproar.  Obama is way way left of center, the most liberal senator in the senate with a NARAL rating of 100%.  Even Boxer wasn't that far left.

  5. Obama did not vote against the BAIPA "to appease the most radical elements."  This is a total falsehood.

It threatened the standing abortion laws in the state, while others were bundled with other provisions that created liability for doctors, designed to intimidate doctors and make it more difficult to perform legal procedures. So Barack Obama opposed it for that reason, not because of any result on babies born alive.

The legislation was designed to be a “wedge” legislation that would have no effect on medical procedures, designed just for these sorts of attacks. The Illinois legislature, after Barack Obama left to take his US Senate seat, passed a law that explicitly said it wouldn’t affect existing Illinois law on choice. Barack Obama has said he would’ve supported that law.

When a group does this, they put one horrible provision (the “infanticide”) part of the bill and package it with a bunch of other provisions that assault a woman’s right to choose. Then, when someone votes against the bill to protect that right, they say the vote was over the “infanticide.”

As for offshore drilling, he has most recently said that he would support a bill with restrained offshore drilling in the interest of comprimise so that we can move on.

He has not refused to aknowledge success in Iraq.  He has stated time and time again that the Surge contributed to the drop in Iraq violence.

Do you have anything you didn't lie about?
