Question:

Which Remington Model 700?

On Monday I am going to buy my first rifle for deer season. The gun store near me has a Remington 700 ADL in .30-06 caliber and a Remington 700 SPS in .308 caliber for a little more money. Both are brand new with black synthetic stocks. The ADL has a 22 inch barrel and the SPS I'm not sure but I think its the same, if anything longer. I was wondering if anyone could help me make a decision? Like, what are the advantages/ disadvantages of each caliber and/or rifle? Also, I am going to buy a Shepherd Scope with it, 3-10x40mm OR 6-18x40mm. Which would be better? I am going to be hunting in the woods of Pennsylvania if that helps, so not really any opportunities for long 1,000 yard shots. Thanks in advance for answering.

  1. As pa. hunter myself, if I had to set up a rifle out of the info in your question I would be OK with either rifle, scope , again if these are my only choices I would go with the 3x10, as far as ammo what ever shoots the best out of the rifle regardless of bullet weight. I personally  would choose the one with out iron sights since I will be scoping it.

  2. I'd let the caliber be the determining factor. While I favor the '06, the .308 is plently for what you need. Since the ADL and SPS are identical in terms of performance, the question is also a matter of taste in appearance.

I went with the CDL in 7mm Mag. And I'm still not convinced I made the right caliber choice. I wanted flat trajectory for long-range target (as well as hunting), but ammo cost is a big factor. I could have fired 100x more rounds if I'd gone with one of the two calibers you are considering.

And for scopes, any solid scope in 4x power is sufficient. If PA woods are anything like GA woods, 300 yards is about as far as you'll be shooting, and you don't NEED more than 2x for that. Too much zoom makes it harder to tell what you're aiming at.

  3. Get a Benelli M3 12 gouge full automatic 12 round under barrel magazine and a whole lot more to make it one of the best and the best as well and to tell one thing in particular about shotguns in here that remington is the america's oldest and do have a reputation for it but berretta the owners of Benellli if the fifth or so oldest companey in the world having done business for more than half a millinia already is still high up and comming that it really is the best shot gun for civilian use and if it is not cilivian even berretta wins the best place for a shot gun with its Frachi SPAS12 shot gun now baned for its awsome power and its name the special purpose assult shotgun stands for it and in that keep in mind about assult part of it that makes it a very good choice if you can get one but go with a Benelli M3 on a very good finish with some gold custom parts with your name or companey name or the sort written and have it in thair light inertia loading versions which is a propritary loading technequie used to load shells automatically as opposed to the noraml recoil operated guns or those filthy pump action shotguns and try buying it online for a good choice insted and I do say budsgunshop.com is good enough for that and still you can pick up your gun at your local gun shop even if it is brough from the other side of the palnnet.

  4. Since the SPS is basically the same rifle as the ADL, with a new name, I don't see there's a lot to choose from. 30-06/180 gr. is a good combination for elk and moose, but a bit much for whitetails, and you'll get an occasional punch-through without expansion; 165 would be a better choice, and that being the case makes the difference between the 30-06 and 308 even less important. I can't imagine why you'd want to handicap yourself with those scopes. They're both overpowered for what you intend, though 3x isn't too bad a handicap. As you point out yourself, you aren't going to shoot at a range that needs more than 6x, and you'll occasionally have a jump shot in which a very low power/wide field of view will be useful. After a lot of experimentation over the years, I've settled on putting Leupold 2-7's on most of my recently purchased deer rifles.

  5. go the sps, with the 3-10, general rule any scope more that 10x you have to adjust the objective lens for different ranges and unless your getting a tactical scope with a side focal plane adjust, the front objective adjustments are bad for quick shooting which you need for deer, and 308 good all rounder with 168grain being optimal, but could go 180, no more.

    GO AUSSIE!!!!!!!!

  6. I like the basic 308 ADL but lean more towards the BDL,  I concur with the earlier posting about the 165 grain ammo - I use 165 grain boatails.

  7. G'Day mate i hunt deer with a 308 here in Australia they are bigger then yr whitetail deer, and i never had a deer do a runner on me, for me to track him down.I do have a 3x10x40 on mine but it doesn't mean i leave it on 10,mine is on 4 sometimes 6 sometimes 8.I use a Burris scope. My second choice would be Leupold but Burris are built stronger and better optic's + a 14 pound spring to leupold 7 pound spring,Burris use the same optic as nightforce.America has a good scope don't look past it mine has never let me down.Sps 308 is a good rifle.I do use a Remington165 gr core lokt  and it does the job very nice.cheers mate
