We will be floating with kids and would prefer to float with one 6 to 8 man raft for that reason. Otherwise I'd like to float in Kayaks. Also if you could recommend some things we must see while there as well as the best campsite for families.

Keep in mind we are a family of drunks so I wouldn't want to disturb other campers if we're up late but I'd like it to be a safe clean place for the kids. I can keep the peace if need be.

  1. Here is a site with a blow-by-blow description of the route of the Big Piney River.  It's difficulty level is 1, unless there is high water, then maybe 2.   The gradient varies from 3.6 to 4.7    Read through the route, there are some roller waves.  Oh, by the way there is a Baptist Camp on the Big Piney so you may not want to camp there and party (lol)!   There are places on the Big Piney that requires portage.

Here is a site with the same type of description of the route of the Gasconade.  You will notice the greater variations of gradient  0.8 to 6.2.  However there is a nice stretch where it is 2.6 to 0.8   Much less turbulent with a smoother ride.  However  in certain areas watch out for log jams and for stumps in riffles.

So . . . . I hope these sites help.  Good luck, have fun and make the kids wear their life jackets!
