I have a Brother Sewing Machine. XL 2620 Special Edition.

I need to buy quite a lot of thread to sew with (I have quite a few different types of material, but don't want to buy different material threads for each one as im c**p at remembering whats what). Which thread is the best for most purposes & Why? Also Where can i buy it from thats not toooooo expensive.

  1. I'm sorry to say that most sewing thread which I have bought over the last few years has been of very disappointing quality. I have huge experience of sewing, by the way.  I have made hundreds of garments and household pieces.

In fact, you can probably only get Guterman thread in most haberdashery shops.  I try to buy Sylko, but I'm not even sure if this is made any more.  The biggest problem with such threads is that they are made up of several much thinner threads twisted together, and if one of the component threads is weak, it will break and unravel behind the sewing-machine needle.  This can easily break the needle.

I have to admit to haunting jumble sales in the hope of picking up old work-baskets, which might have little spools of silk thread.  Silk thread bought new is dreadfully expensive. And not much on the spool.

If you are sewing coarse fabrics such as denim, you can use an unbreakable thread, but this is not easy to find, and I think it is only available in a very limited range of colours.

I can't recommend invisible thread, as it can be very tricky to work with ona machine.

  2. Drima is the best for me sews beautifull you should be able to get it in uk   happy sewing

  3. Mettler silk finish cotton thread 50 weight.  I use it for all my sewing.

Added advantage does not load the bobbin with fuzz.  Order online, just search Mettler Thread.  Superior Thread is another great one
