Which TV is better for the environment?

I have a traditional 27" tube tv but I want a flat screen LCD TV, a 32". Does the LCD use less electricity? Would it be worthwhile to sell my tube tv and get the LCD?

From what I have uncovered in the past, if you're looking to invest in an LCD and want to make sure it is eco-friendly, there are two requirements.

1/ make sure it is Energy Star.

2/ Sharp is known to be the most green electronic company of all televisions produced these days.

I don't know if LEDs are being implemented into flat-panel televisions now, but they are in laptops (Apple uses them). If LED-based televisions are out there, I wouldn't be surprised if this would factor in another view of the best "green" flat-panel television.

Most of the newer flat panel TVs (including LCDs) do use more nergy that the old tube models.  If you're looking, be sure to find one with an energy star rating.

You may not get much, if anything, trying to sell the old one (especially w/ digital only coming soon).  May be easier to donate or bring to a recycling center.

What's best for the environment is using what you've already got... the electricity difference is negligible compared to the energy and raw materials consumed to produce a new TV and the waste generated by getting rid of the old one.
