Question:

Which TV series should I watch?

I have some time on my hands, and I'd like to start a new TV series - either something I can buy on DVD, or at least something I can watch regularly on my ultra-premium cable.

Problem is, I'm not sure what to choose. Maybe someone can help me pick the perfect series.

Generally, I like recent, colorful, exaggerated dramas - nothing too juvenile, though (I tried The O.C. and couldn't get into it in the long-term). I enjoy suspense, but I can't get into 24 or LOST, and I despise police thrillers. I'm a fashion-forward twenty-something married straight guy - I like shows with a touch of elegance and more than a little wit.

NO reality TV. NO medical dramas.

A few TV shows I've enjoyed:

Arrested Development

Friends

The Office

Gilmore Girls

Alias

The Closer

The West Wing

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip

Here's hopin' someone can help me out.

  1. i love friends. I wasnt around to see it on TV so i bought it on DVD. they are so good! and funny, and sad...... friends rules! lol

  2. One Tree Hill

    Roswell

    Scrubs

  3. Since you liked Alias, you'll probably enjoy Heroes.  It's got a similar feel with a sci-fi edge to it.

And since you enjoy elegance and wit, take a look at Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives and Pushing Daisies.  All are one hour dramas with a keen sense of humor and a unique visual style.  They're all great fun.  And my husband, a straight guy, loves them :-)

If you don't mind an oldie, check out Northern Exposure on DVD.  It's about 10 years old, but it's a great blend of drama, comedy and fantasy.

  4. Dirty, s**y Money is a good show and it hasn't been on the air that long.  The new season begins either late September or early October.

  5. heroes is great!! some shows i really got into were ugly betty on abc chuck on nbc and scrubs is hillarious

  6. I loved Studio 60 on Sunset Strip.  I guess we were the only ones since the didn't pick it up for another season.

Have you checked out Heroes?  It's awesome!!  We'll be starting the third season in Sept so you can check out the first two seasons on DVD.  It's so unlike the normal superhero show, more normal but not.  My husband and I love it and most of my friends do to.

Burn Notice is on USA with its second season new shows right now.  It's really good.

  7. Heroes. If you watch about the first two-three episodes, you will feel compelled to watch the rest of the show.

  8. Recent / Colorful / Exaggerated Dramedy =  ENTOURAGE

  9. Thses are all great shows

    NUMB3RS

    GHOSTWHISPERER

    SUPERNATURAL

    NCIS

  10. Robot chicken

  11. 30 Rock, How I met your Mother, Burn Notice, and if you get HBO Trublood coming up in Sept. looks good. You can check some of these out on Hulu.com to see if you like them. 30 Rock is already one of my favs.

  12. Family Guy

    Hawaii 5-0

    Magnum P.I.

Lost you can watch all the seasons for free on abc's website

  13. How bout' Journeyman? I got so into it that I can't wait for the new season premier! It's about this guy who ends up being pulled through time into the past to change things. His trips through time cause him to disappear for days or weeks in his real time and this causes all kinds of problems with his family(like once he was walking through a crowded farmer's market holding his sons' hand and he jumped through time and left his son alone there), as well as his suspicious police officer brother. It is hard to take your eyes off it.

I also like Life. It is about this guy who was a police officer wrongly convicted in a murder. He spends years in prison before his attorney finally gets his conviction overturned. He is reinstated to his former position in the police department, and he is also payed an undisclosed amount of money by the p.d. for wrongful imprisonment. He is really goofy sounding, coming up with odd answers to simple questions like where are you. He pulls a lot of existential c**p out of his hat if someone asks where are you, or are you here with me? He practically lives on fresh fruit because he couldn't get any in prison. He is clueless with a cell phone bcuz when he went in they weren't that common. He is slowly unraveling the mystery behind who set him up to take the fall in the murders he was convicted of. All the while he solves crimes in his own new and funky way. Maybe you can read a few of the episode recaps out there for these two and see if they are to your liking. Good luck, and hope this helps.
