  1. I would say Santa Barbara or Santa Cruz for the location!!

For a B.S. it really doesn't matter to be honest. The education you get at any decent institution will be the same, minus MIT. When you consider going for your M.S. or Ph.D. then it REALLY matters what school and research you perform.

What about CSU like Cal Poly SLO or Pomona. I think these  institutions will focus more on students pursuing an undergrad degree since the professors focus is not on research and more on education.

You have to be ignorant or prejudice to make such broad comments about UC Merced, Irvine, Riverside and Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz is known to have a fine engineering department, and is one of the top schools in the nation for optics and astronomy. Irvine, and Riverside are top 100 schools in the nation and both of their schools also have a good engineering program and top notch faculty. Merced is a smaller program but that is to the benefit of the EE students.

I graduated from a so called "top school" in electrical engineering and I have classmates who went to lesser known schools but that doesn't mean I received a better education. In my opinion, you receive a better education when the faculty student ratio is lower (20:1) allowing more opportunities for student teacher interaction and when you are a part of a program that has high interest in educating.

I would still advise to look into Cal Poly SLO / Pomona and also include UC Berkeley in the mix, even if you think your chances are slim.

  2. i would definitely say UCSB. hands down. they excel in engineering, physics, and business.

irvine is best at sciences, and santa cruz isn't a very good school but its psychlogy department is ok. take merced and riverside out!! they are horrible! people get accepted into there wthout even applying!
