Question:

Which UK cars fall into the £35 a year tax band?

I'm wanting to buy a car that is rediculously cheap to insure, tax and run. So far the Smart car ticks the most boxes. Also, I don't want to spend more than about £5000.

Thanks for your input!

  1. Nothing that you would want to drive.   Your budget is 5,000 pounds?around a thousand will get you a straight, clean example of a Mercedes 190E 1.8 manual with full service history, a comfortable interior, adequate pace and long-distance ability, adeqaute economy, superb reliability, and SURVIVABILITY OF AN ACCIDENT which is not something your Smart coffin can give you.

  2. My diesel Peugeot 207 fits into the tax bracket and its a lovely car to drive too!

  3. At present, there are only a few cars that fall into the £35 a year tax band category. The Toyota Aygo (both petrol and diesel versions) is one, along with the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107, it emits just 109g/km. Small-engined diesels such as the Renault Clio 1.5 dCi, Peugeot 207 1.4 HDI and Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCI also make the grade.

  4. I own a Peugeot 107 and im sure it is no more that.

  5. I dont know but dont buy a Smart car, it will NOT be cheap to run (apart from the fuel consumption during the intermittant times it is still on the road and not in a garage for another repair).

  6. Renault Megane, soon to be my next car for this very reason. Currently have a Vauxhall Zafira which cost me £210 this year for 12 months and due to go up substantially next year.

  7. Well any car that you can run faster than, will fit into that tax bracket.

  8. Smart cars are expensive.

I have a Toyota Aygo, which costs £35 per year to tax and about that to fill the tank, which will take you getting on for 500 miles. It has the lowest CO2 emissions other than the Prius. Also is a nippy little motor which, contrary to popular belief, has enough boot space to get a week's shopping in.

    Basic model about 7 grand.

I can whole-heartedly recommend one. (Does blow about in a high wind, mind.)
