According to the US Census bureau New Hampshire has the lowest poverty rate at 6%.  So one could assume that since NH has the lowest per capita rate of residents below the poverty line, the standard of living for the average resident might be higher.

It's difficult to compare state vs state based on statistical data.  Take NY for example, NYC is a very expensive city to live in and yet is home to a disproportional percentage of NY states residents.  People who live in NYC get paid more than somebody who does the same job but lives in Albany, NY.  That doesn't mean the "standard of living" is higher NYC, your $ just doesn't go as far.
