Out of all the cities you have either lived in or have visited, which American City would you say has a Good Public Transportation System that expands into the metropolitian area and the American City that does not have a strong Public Transportation System that expands into the metropolitian area.

======================================...

Best City with Public Transportation: Chicago, Illinois because transporation exist in 6 out of the 7 metropolitian counties in Illinois and it is connected with buses and trains.

Worst City with Public Transportation: Detroit, Michigan because many cities are eliminating public transportation in the suburbs and Detroit only has on on ground bus system that does not run effecienty.

  1. I heard Chicago has a good system, but the best transit system I've seen is in New York City. Considering the majority of people threre don't have cars, that attest to it's importance and quality.

San Francisco's BART is also very good. It's not really for intracity travel, but it connects a large chunk of the Bay Area to San Francisco.

Practically Every city outside the major cities have really poor transit systems. The US was built to run as a automobile nation, with large expanses of suburbs instead of tightly packed cities with foot traffic and public transport.

  2. Through personal experience I would say.

    Best: New York City

Worst: Houston their mass transit is practically non-exsistent

  3. I live  in NYC and it has the GREATEST (not necessarily a good system)..  It handles something like 11 million people a day. You can get from ANY WHERE in NYC to ANYWHERE (using the bus or train or combo - all for 1 fair).  But because it is so crowded some people say it is probably the worst.

I also live in Maui.  They have NO public transportation system.  Not even a bus.  And it is not like Maui is an unknown city that nobody live in or visits.

    Good Luck...

  4. I don't know where the best is but I know it's pretty terrible here in Portland OR.  To make things worse, now that people want to use it more to save on gas, the city is raising the ticket costs quite a bit.

  5. the race to the top of the list is lead by Portland, Oregon which has a terrific new system. The San Fransisco BART would be next followed by Chicago, NY and Honololu

The bottom? eeef, the list is tooo long, but I'll say Detroit.

  6. Best City - hmm, probably NYC, from personal experience it was smooth and fast, they say that 75% of the people who live in Manhattan don't own a car- I hear a lot of good things about Chicago's but I didn't take mass transit while I was up there.

Worst City - Louisville, KY - Constantly late or sometimes 20 minutes early and they refuse to do anything about complaints. Outside of the downtown area/Bardstown Rd. area buses stop running pretty early (I  live in S. Indiana and the bus closest to us stops running before 8PM and doesn't even run on Sundays). Now they're raising the price of fare to meet with rising gas prices. They tried to bring light rail to Louisville but nope, instead they want 2 more highways. We are trying to move to Chicago next year.

  7. Best is New York City, without a doubt.

  8. That I know of...

    The best: Washington DC

    The worst: Newyork
