Question:

Which Video Camera Should We Buy?

I am helping to plan a small local film class. It isn't going to be huge and we aren't going to be able to buy anything over $1,000. But we want something that still looks as professional as possible for around $500 because we are going to be buying 2 cameras.

If you could give any advice on which camera to buy or just general advice that would be great.

  1. The Canon FS10 ($500) and the Canon FS11 ($600) works great! The only difference between the two is that the FS10 model only has 8GB internal flash memory and the FS11 has 16GB. You could still settle for the 8GB model because it would still have at least 2 hours of recording time in the highest quality. Both cameras have 48x zoom (which is amazing).

I'm suggesting these two cameras because it's really easy for using with Macintosh computers. I'm not sure if you're going to use Macs, but I suggest them also because their editing programs (i.e. iMovie, Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Express, etc.) are virtually easier to use than other top-notch programs. I personally use the iMovie line.

Anyways, DV is probably the best looking recording out there, but takes forever to capture it onto the computer so I recommend flash memory based because they are a breeze to import. Good luck!

  2. If you are going to teach the fundamentals of video/film (like Depth of Field) get a camcorder with as many manual controls as possible, even if it's not HD.

I have a Cannon Optura 60, and while it's a not a professional SD DV camcorder, it is a good starter camcorder. it has a manual focus ring, settings for aperture, exposure and shutter speed, and a input for an external mic.

I bought it in 2006 at around $600, but it's at a lower price now.
