Which accounting job should i take?

i'm having trouble deciding which job offer to accept. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

1. small tax firm with less than 10 people doing mostly corporate tax. pays 50k and even pays overtime. i'm interested in learning about tax but i'm hesitate because there are only 10 people. i've worked at a small audit firm once and i began hating it because it was a bit lonely since everyone was much older or different from me. also, lack of training added to my confusion. the commute is only a couple miles. but i also feel that this is the best way to get my foot into big 4 because they deal with corporate taxes.

2. los angeles county auditor. i'm not very interested in the audit work but i feel i can make a lot of friends because there are a lot of recent graduates. also with so many employees, i doubt anyone would notice during those days i just want to be left alone in my cubicle. it pays about 55-60k. commute is 20 miles. but will it open up doors to big 4 or other large public firms later on? i'd hate to be stuck in government if i discover that i don't enjoy it.

i think i will be happier in option 2, but will big 4 overlook my government auditing experience?

  1. i take it you are early 20ies -- i would go with 2 --= has more networking possibilities!!!!

  2. Sounds like 2 will be your best bet. However, I would suggest you get some experience in govt auditing and corporate tax since it will help you in the long term. The more you know the more marketable you will be and if you ever want to make a change you'll have much more for your resume. And don't think you won't get noticed in your job. Also remember that working for the govt., even if it is county is a good job & has great benefits, you can retire after 20 years of service.Good Luck.
