Since the 1950s, the "Method" has become the dominant training technique for American actors, so to a certain extent, almost all actors are method-trained. The 1st and most famous actors to be associated with "the Method" were Marlon Brando and James Dean. Today, Sean Penn, Robert de Niro, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Johnny Depp, and Meryl Streep are all actors associated closely with "the Method." Interestingly, Marilyn Monroe studied and learned "the Method" at the height of her film stardom. Her performance in BUS STOP reflects this training.

Method acting isn't really a specific set of rules for actors.  It is whatever method you use to get into character.  So all actors are essentially method actors.  They just use different methods.

The "Method" that is usually associated with the words "He/She is a method actor" is Stanislavski's method.  The initial approach is to recall a past experience and immerse oneself in the emotion of that experience so as to apply it to the scene presently being undertaken.

Personally, this method is not very effective for me.  I use parts of it, but for the most part I have to rely on the CHARACTER'S emotions and experiences onstage.  If you bury yourself in your own experiences you won't be a well rounded character because you won't be focused on what is happening onstage, but instead on yourself.  But whatever works to get that much more out of your performance.  To each his own:)
