I recently wrote a check out, it was for $2500 but now i am thinking that in the long hand version where i write the amount out, i think i might've wrote twenty hundred. the check has been cashed and now i am wondering, will it be cashed for 2500 or 2000? should i call the bank and tell them my error?

  1. It's nice to ask & answer questions here in Yahoo, but if it's already been cashed and the other party got 2000 instead of 2500, you'll be hearing from him mighty quick. You can also call the bank and ASK THE BANK. Your answer will be quicker and more reliant than asking us dummies.

  2. I personally have never done this, but if you were paying a bill and it was only cashed for 2000, you are going to have a finance charge, or owe someone $500 more...

I would call the bank or who ever you made the check out to to see which amount was cashed, just so you are sure... or you can just wait until you get your statement since it is the first of the month today.

  3. If it was cashed, check with your bank.

  4. When a bank is cashing the check they are supposed to go by the long hand written version not the numerical written amount.  However, more often than not, the amount the check is cashed for is the numerically written amount.  The best thing to do is check with your bank.  If they cashed it for $2500 and it should have been $2000 the bank will correct the error as they are at fault for not cashing it for the legally written amount (long version).

If it was supposed to be for $2500 and they cashed it for $2000 you need to call the party you wrote the check to and make arrangements to get them their remaining $500.

Either way it is all fixable.  Good luck!

  5. If the check has been cashed, it's pretty easy to tell what was paid out on it. It is likely that the $2500 written after the dollar sign to the far right was paid on the check. But the bank can verify this for you. You can then dispute it if it was indeed supposed to be $2000.
