Which animal is melatonin extracted from?

Some of my friends and I were discussing the use of melatonin and one of them asked which animal melatonin came from, and I figured the most easiest way to find out would be to go to Yahoo answers =D

Most melatonin sold these days is produced synthetically. It's a fairly simple molecule, and without looking into it, I'd say it looks pretty easy to synthesize on a commercial scale.

In short, made in a test tube.

Used to be extracted from animals - it's part of the biochemistry of essentially everything with a backbone and beyond. These days, it's cheaper to do the above.
