You'll find a lots of free antivirus if you google them. But, updates are required on a regular basis for all of them, the reason being that in today's world, everyday people invent some or the other Viruses.

You need to keep track of all of them and update your anti-virus so that it knows which file would be the newest virus. Its called updating the Virus Definitions.

You can easily find those in the internet. Under DOS section.

A effective anti-virus will update its virus signiture database everyday.

Till now no  company had updated their product i.e.antivirus till now free of cost.

There is NO antivirus that does not need an update for the simple reason that new viruses appear daily and the AV people try to stay ahead of them or at least keep up with them. Daily updates are absolutely essential if your antivirus is going to do you any good. An outdated AV is totally worthless.
