  1. Your average toaster uses WAY more electricity than your average light bulb for a given amount of time turned on.  2 slice toasters use around 1000 watts and 4 slicers use over 1600 watts.

    Light bulbs are many different wattages but 100 watts is a really bright household bulb.  The normal florescent bulbs are under 15 watts.

    The toaster is only on for a short period of time, so if you take an entire day into account, the light bulb may use more electricity.

  2. No single appliance dominated the use of electricity. Refrigerators consumed the most electricity (14 percent of total electricity use for all purposes), followed by lighting (9 percent), clothes dryers (6 percent), freezers (3 percent), and color TV’s (3 percent);

  3. Toaster, if they are on for the same time.

    The toaster has a higher power rating (watts) so the toaster uses more power (electricity) per hour.

    A device with a lower power consumption (watts) uses less electricity than one with a higher power consumption, if they are on for the same amount of time.
