I want to get the best deal on a truck, but there is a wide difference in the prices from these services . Not sure which one to use for base pricing.

  1. Kelly is what banks use to determine how much to loan you, NADA has a few more extras like options, different levals of high milage, but in the end these make little differnence in what the bank will lend you, a private party will pay, or trade in value.

  2. Edmunds.

  3. I buy alot of cars, and I find neither are real world value

  4. both go by what happens at the auction depends on where you live if your looking for a truck you can pretty much name your price in this market dont go by what they say used vec. have a huge mark up and believe me they will take what ever you tell them to get rid of it

  5. None are actual that you need to do some judgement yourself.

KBB seems to be much lower than NADA, the price is quite true for the MDX that I bought. You can use autotrader.com, cars.com to see what price others selling - even the lowest price you still have 1k to 2k of negoitate room, ebay reasearch is quite helpful to to find what other people are paying for the car.

  6. Ultimately the market will determine what your car is worth.

Realistically you should go by the lower of the two with today's economy.

  7. Actually most dealers and banks use the Black Book.  It's not available to the general public so unless you've got a friend on the inside you're out of luck.  I work in the banking industry and the Black Book values are generally lower on trade-in and finance values and higher on retail.

Take an average of KBB and NADA and you'll be pretty close on a private sale.
