These are called microcontollers.

They are used in anything electrical with a digital display or a bunch of buttons. Also commonly used to control machines.

Examples: wristwatch, clock radio, alarm clock, printer, computer keyboard, TV, stereo, thermostat, MP3 player, applicances like oven, microwave, washer, dryer, calculator.

Many motors or engines use them. Car engines have very expensive ones, but many cheap ones are used to control DC motors, such as in electric seat controls in car. Most cars have 5 or more microcontrollers. They are also used for control hard disk drives and many other machines.

Go to the PIC site for example circuits, many different circuits are used.
