  1. One of the ways scientists compare intelligence in higher animals is to find out if they are self-aware. What this means is that an individual is aware that it exists. to test this, scientists place animals in front of a mirror. self aware animals recognise that what they see is a reflection. Try it at home, placing a mirror in front of cat (which are not self aware) is quite amusing!). In monkeys and apes, we find the only monkey that is self aware is the Japanese Macaque. all the ape species are self aware, and of these the chimpanzee is the most intelligent.

I am not sure data for dolphins, and i would be interested to find out.

BTW be aware of the brain to body weight ratio as it is a very in precise measure of intelligence. some early humans had much larger brain-body ratio then us but they had much more basic technology.

  2. That's a difficult question to answer, since we can only really define and measure intelligence according to our understanding of our own human intelligence.

Let's face it, we don't always do a great job of measuring and defining human intelligence, so how can we reliably measure and compare two very different species.

More work has been done on chimp intelligence - since they're more similar to us than dolphins are it takes less work to adapt tests for their use - but there's been some interesting work done on dolphins also.

Both are sociable animals, so have a higher than average social intelligence, as far as we can tell.

Both also have a large brain:body size ratio - I believe it is slightly higher in dolphins, but dolphins also have fewer trans-hemispheric links so the extra brain size may be merely to compensate for this.

  3. There is no scientific definition of intelligence.  So there is no answer to your question.  Chimpanzees are better at certain problem solving abilities and dolphins seem to be better at others.  But many of these differences in ability can be explained more by evolutionary history and environment than intelligence.  For instance, chimpanzees are better at color differentiation and dolphins are better at 3-dimensional problem solving (they live in a 3 dimensional environment)

However, many cognitive tests given to chimpanzees have not been given to dolphins due to the differences in environment and the cost factor as well.

However, many people like to equate the Encephalization Quotiant with "Inteligence".  This is a body to brain size ratio that generally approximates how much of the brain is needed for metabolic function and the rest can be used for problem solving.  This measure is frought with problems, but after humans (which have the largest EQ ratio) comes the bottlenosed dolphin and a few other dolphin species (but not all or even most) followed by some of the great apes.

  4. Dolphin and judging by your spelling ( i assume a typo) ...not you. :P

Only kidding, but yes im sure it has been proven that dolphins are smarter!

  5. surely dolphins... for detailed explaination:
