I will move to Berlin for work the company will give me up to 1,300 euros for monthly rent. I wanted to know what I could afford with that in Berlin and where? I only need a one or two bedroom apartment. Not interested in a studio. Are there lofts in Berlin?

Thanks

  1. I would prefer Charlottenburg (close to Kurfürstendamm) or Schöneberg if you want to live in the city.

Lichterfelde if you want to be a little more on the quiet side.

  2. You could probably buy a decent flat and use your allowance to pay it off (if you had a reasonable amount for a deposit)!

I think you your allowance is about 3 times as much as you would need to stay in a cool neighbourhood in the former east Berlin, just to give you an idea.

  3. Wow. 1,300? For that amount you can get something really nice.

Prenzlauer Berg in the east is a very popular neighborhood with a lot of young folks and families. I am sure you'll find a very nice loft there. Or try Mitte.

Some people prefer to live in the western part but that really depends on what kind of crowd you like...

Try this website. It's from an English city mag with lots of info on Berlin and it's people (what to do - what not to do):

They also help you to find accomodation:

  4. Did you say THIRTEENHUNDRED? I can't believe it! Your company probably expects you to have a fine flat of a good 150 sqm in Berlin-Charlottenburg; otherwise that's outrageous. That's Berlin's finest district in center town. Close to that (not geographically, but to prices and living standards) are maybe Steglitz and Spandau.

Lofts there are, mostly in the less fine districts, and maybe you'll have problems explaining the rent to your company, else they pay flat ahead. Which I would choose; take the money and see what you can get for it. Make sure they pay you in advance.
