Sony, Nikon, Canon are some good brands.. Things you should check before buying a camera are:

Good mega pixel rating.. At the least 6. 6 is kinda old now.. but getting a 7.1 and 8 doesn't really have any difference. There is NOT any appreciable increase in photo quality above 7.1. Only resolution increases.

Go for good optical zoom.. Don't even bother about Digital zoom. You can easily get cameras having 10x optical zoom at a price for 10k INR.

Another thing to look out is customizations, like focus, white balance, exposure, ISO etc etc.. The more customizations, the better...
