  1. Unless you have already been to Paris and spent enough time to see its major sights then it is absurd to go to the trouble and expense of traveling to France without going to Paris.

It is the most visited tourist destination in the world because it is the best tourist destination in th world.

And if you don't speak French then Paris is the city best equiped to deal with you. almost everyone in the tourist and service industries speaks at least a little English.

Visiting France and not seeing Paris is like visiting New York state and not seeing New York City and going to Buffalo instead.

  2. Montpellier is my personal favorite place to visit. A very quaint place with some interesting architecture, and a fantastic rail journey can be taken from there to Perpignan, which should also be interesting to visit.

The French hate tourists a who do not speak a word of French and who do not even attempt to speak any French. If you learn a little French and try to use it you will find them very friendly and helpful, even if they don't really understand what you are asking. If you simply try to speak louder in your own language and point a lot, you will generally be ignored.

  3. You don't really need to know French, but if you have a basic understanding the French people become a whole lot friendlier.  If you don't have a basic understanding get the greetings memorized then apologize and ask if they speak English, all with a smile.  Most will speak English, especially if you're doing something that that caters for tourists.  If they don't, just have some fun and try to bumble and sign your way through a conversation.  Great places to visit are Paris, the Riviera, Normandy, Bordeaux, the Pyrenees and Alps.  It all depends on what you're looking for - France has very diverse regional cultures and attractions that offer very different experiences.  My favorite area was Normandy - lots of attractions for me as a history buff and beautiful beaches on the English Channel.

  4. Hello,

as a french person, i can say that with foreigners we just want them to make an effort to speak french, and then they re gonna try to help you. So just learn the basics.

If you wanna go to france for this summer i would suggest you to go to the south west of france on the coast. for example you can go to biarritz which is located close to spain. then of course go to Paris!!

    Have fun there

  5. there are so many places to visit in France !!!!!

Toulouse, bordeaux, Paris...........Lyon also Annecy, Evian les bains........Marseille for the weather, the sea and the view from La bonne mère !!!!

It all depends on how you wanna spend your holidays !!!

And for sure, you will need to know the a bit of french.....but not much.

Bonjour, au revoir, excusez moi, merci, s'il vous plait. You don't need to be fluent, of course. But if you know a bit of french, it will be easier for you.

And if you need help...it will be easier for u !!

It's like going to the US without talking english.......... I'm sure it would be a real nightmare !!!!

  6. Quote: "visiting New York state and not seeing New York City" > this is not hard since NYC is located in New Jersey ;)

By the way, i generally agree with the actual answers. If you want a little glimpse of some words which could be useful for you (some hyperbasic stuff, i know!):

    bonjour [bon-joor]= hello

merci (beaucoup) [mer-cy bo-ckoo]= thank you (very much)

    au revoir [o re-voar] = bye

combien ca coute? [con-bien sa coot] = how much is it?

ou se trouve... [oo se troov] = where is...

well, if you would like to learn some more, do not hesitate to e-mail me, i would be glad to help!

    BiBi
