I am thinking of moving to Cork and would prefer to avoid renting in the worst areas (drug addicts, gang related crime, etc.).

  1. I used to work in Cork and was lucky to be living in the famous Montenotte, one of the poshest parts of Cork! Douglas is indeed lovely and not too far from the centre. The area east of the city (on the Cobh road) is also recommended, and now the train service has improved in frequency.

    I would prefer not to live in north Cork (Blackpool), also places such as Togher. The city centre is good if you're looking for an apartment, but very expensive.

    Happy hunting.

  2. Worst area in absolute : Holly Hill

    You don't want to live there. They burn cars, and sometimes bus service is canceled because they have stoned the bus driver.

    Best areas :

    - city center (if you like city life and want pubs around);

    - close to Opera house on other side of bridge (new condos, expensive but nice);

    - Montenotte (nice houses, close to downtown);

    - Monastery Hill (off Blarney Street; brilliant location if you'll work at Apple, walking distance to work and to downtown .. downtown and UCC are walking distance);

    - Douglas, even Blarney if you have a car (about 5 miles distance from downtown).

    daft.ie is the best place to look for apartments and house shares in Cork.

  3. Cork City? or in the county?

  4. Buying in Cork City (and surrounds) - Askaboutmoney.comTo be fair Douglas is the probably the best area in Cork to live in at present. Ive heard similar thoughts about Douglas before and its always from people ...

  5. Douglas sucks and is full of liars,i'm not from togher but i know a lot of people from there and badmouthing it is pure ignorance,theres a lot of fine people in togher.

    And for the record i feel a lot greater walking through togher than i do douglas.some cheek.

    To the origional post cork can roughly be divided into two groups(not northside/southside).The decent people and the "dont touch me people" people,take your pick.

    togher ballyphehane greenmount are ok and are just a half hour walk into town.
