  2. It depends on if you are talking about the specific city, or also including the suburbs (towns directly adjacent to the city with no empty land in between, since in general many of the people who work in the city live in the suburbs, therefore the city couldn't survive without the suburbs).

    The above list is correct for cities alone.  For including suburbs, the term you want to look up is "Metropolitan Area" or "Metropolitan Statistical Area".

    For instance, in the list above, Indianapolis is larger than St. Louis, which isn't even on the list.  But if we include suburbs, St. Louis is nearly twice as large as Indianapolis.
