Thunderstorms happen when there is warm and moist air at the surface and cool air above. Air warmer air rises and if it doesn't cool down by adiabatic effect (the same that happens in your fridge when a gas is released) to the surrounding air, it continues to climb all the way to the tropopause, the top of our atmosphere. When that happens, the friction of the air molecules is such as it creates static electricity that discharges as lightning bolts.

Although some places are more prone to those, there isn't a place on earth where it can't happen.

Actually that last answer is incorrect, as there has never  been a thunderstorm recorded above the artic circle or below the antartic circle.  Many countries extend above the arctic circle, US, Canada, Russa, and a few European countries.
