Question:

Which area/street of Termini (Rome) is dangerous at night?

I will be going to Rome with my bf end of this month. My flight will arrive at Ciampino airport at 11.15pm. As we are on budget traveling, we are planning to take the shuttle bus from airport to Termini. Understood that the shuttle bus will arrive at Via Marsala. We are worried if it is dangerous to walk around that area at midnight (around 12 something).

anyone can advise which area/street near Termini that we should avoid at late night?

Thanks in advance.

  1. “Dangerous” is an exaggeration, there are just a higher number of vagrants and illegals  at that time of night. On the other hand via Marsala is better than the other side, via Giolitti, and the bus stops at the front end, which is always full of people and well policed. I wouldn’t worry all that much, just watch your purses for the odd pick pocket and take a public cab (not the private unmarked ones) to your hotel. The entire front side of Termini is quite decent, with good hotels and a family type neighbourhood. Rome is, on the whole, quite a peaceful town and Italy is way down on the crime scala (US 0,428, Europe 0,250 Italy 0,128). Have a nice stay.

  2. As everyone else mentions above...I didnt find the area around the Termini "dangerous" in any sense of the word....

My daughter and I went to Rome back in March - Arpil of '07. Our hotel was right around the area of the Termini and we walked around every where with no problems at all (cept the pickpockets-be aware of your surroundings)...I am 37 and she turned 18 on that trip....she and I walked the city streets, including around the Termini at 2-3 am and had no worries at all...we never once had a feeling of being in fear...never! So enjoy your visit and besides the pickpocket situation...dont even think about "dangers"....

Rome was definately one of the ((( biggest yet safest ))) places I have ever been to...any where!

  3. I am roman...

termini and all center of rome is not dangerous...because there are a lot of police and there are a lot of tourists like you..

there are some tramps or drunkards but they are quite and calm! if you could be some problems, your boyfriend will protect you!

  4. I went on a school trip to italy, and we were a group of 21 girls and 3 female teachers, but we were still okay walking around our hotel (right across the road from the termini) and the station late at night.

Although there were some.. 'questionable' people around, we didn't get hassled or anything, and there were a lot more normal people than sketchy...lol.

Although it might seem quite dodgy, it's pretty okay, people were weird but didn't do anything to us.....if you get what i mean. lol.

I'm SURE you'll be absolutely fine.

  5. I've flown in to Ciampino twice so far and both times I've taken the Terravision bus to Termini. You're quite right, it drops you on Via Marsala, at one of the main entrances to Termini.

I don't want to scare you, but Via Marsala looks a bit scary when you first arrive, especially that late at night. There's lots going on there - cars, people, some dodgy. I don't know if I'd like to be wandering around there at midnight, lumping bags around behind me. You'll probably be accosted by some shady characters who want to 'help' you, then demand money from you when they have given you advice. If anyone asks if they can help you, just tell them 'No thanks' in a friendly voice and walk on.

There are a lot of taxis around there where the bus drops you, so you could get into one of those and go straight to your hotel/hostel/wherever you're staying. It could be more expensive than you'd like, but you are arriving at a not-too-decent hour after all. Then when you know where you're staying, you could just walk back there at the end of the day after that. I'd want to get rid of the luggage ASAP!

Termini isn't really dangerous or scary at night, so long as you're careful and don't look like you're lost. Arriving there at midnight, with all your bags, not knowing where you are or where you're going ..... you'll definitely look as lost as you could be.

  7. I've only been to Rome once (2006)...so you may want to take this with a grain of salt....

but I stayed in a hotel near the train station and never felt threatened (even late at night and alone). There are definetely some sketchy people hanging around, but I've been much more freaked out walking around American cities. There will also be plenty of taxis around if you don't want to walk to your hotel.

Have fun!...wish I could come too!

  9. itì's fine. termini is in the midtown, even if Termini itself (the station) it's not exactly the safest place in rome....but still Via marsala (that is on the left side of the station) is ok,there always are police men etc,so u don't really have to worry. if i were you i would organize where to go exactly once off the bus, tho'.

btw don't worry, really. u might have to if u were a lonely girl, but u'r with ur bf...u won't have to worry...just don't think "once i'm off i'll ask" coz there may not be many "Italians" there (it's almost like a lil' china town around there).

tc and enjoy ur stay in my wonderful city ;) hope u'll like it!
