I am thinking of moving to Calgary and I don't know much as far as the good and not so good places to live there...which areas of Calgary are safer than others? Which areas are considered "ethnic" areas? Can anybody give me an idea of if Chinese Canadians or Indian Canadians, etc, usually populate a certain area of Calgary, or which places are more safe or better, etc?

  1. North East Calgary is easily the highest concentration of ethnic minorities in the city, followed by the North West. The N.Eis also the highest crime area of the city, though it's still fairly safe relative to other big cities "crime" areas.

Forest lawn, dover, and ogden all have a lot of crime, especially drugs and prostitution. These 3 are officially in the S.E, but are more connected to the n.e than the rest of the S.E,The safest part of the city is probably the S.E or S.W, though there are great neighborhoods in the N.W as well. Calgary is pretty much all residential, though there are a lot of cool older neighborhoods that cluster around the city center.

  2. Calgary is a great young city. Its bursting at the seams due to growth/ make sure you have at least temporary accomodations arranged for arrival.  It would be best if you could stay somewhere temporary to get a feel and a chance to scout the city before settling on a location depending on where you job is etc.. Its not a stratified city meaning people of all ethnicities pretty much live where they want.  There is a smallish Chinatown area.   But in most areas Your neighbour can be vietnamese, polish, canadian, native or punjabi.  There arent really bad spots but if you stay to the suburbs and out of the downtown core as it is not really "resident friendly" ..more like office towers at day and dead by night.  Any other areas of the city are pretty good.  The south side is popular, in around the Glenmore Reservoir

Banff Park and the mountains are an hour and half west of the city, visable from Calgary on a clear day, make sure you spend some time getting to know that area while you are there as its pretty spectacular.

dont know if this is of help:
