Question:

Which arm creates the most power in the golf swing?

Me and my friends have been having a discussion about which arm creates the most power in the downswing of a golf swing. We realise that power is being created by many different factors but just want to determine which arm creates the most power out of the two, the right or the left, any ideas?

cheers guys.

  1. The bottom hand does. In the case of right handed golfers it is the right hand and left handed golfers it is the left one. The reason for this is that if you tried to hit a golf ball with only one hand you would see which generates more power. The bottom hand is the one that releseases or rolls over generating that extra momentum for club head speed.

  2. Its the bottom hand;  right for RH golfers.   Think of your right arm as a piston on the downswing.

  3. Aha you have asked a question that is getting many conflicting answers.  I say for a right hander the left arm is most important.  Too much emphasis with the right arm will just make you hook it.  But power I beleive is generated more with the legs and torso than either arm.

  4. Depends if you want to hit the ball with power or make a slapping pass at the ball.  Use the left side if you want to hit the ball straight or create a draw.  If your swing is all right handed you can count on inconsistent shots such as the slice or pull hooks.  Your choice.

  5. I note the question is right/left "arm".

For a right-hander its got to be right arm....why??

The left arm don't really bend as much as the right arm throughout the swing.

    At the impact area

    1) Your left elbow is already straight so there's little power you can add to it

    2) Your right elbow is still bent and must be straighten to hit the ball.

    .

  6. well the left arm for righties as its the pivot point try hitting shots with just your left and then your right which one goes the farthest???/ the left

  7. If you have a right handed swing then your left hand and vise versa the bottom hand does all the work the other one is just there for the ride.

  8. The bottom hand, Right-hand in righties and the left-hand in us southpaw golfers.  The top hand controls and stabilizes the club through the entire swing and impact.

  9. Power comes from your legs and trunk and other large muscles.  I think the hands and arms are the least important factors in hitting for power.  Clubhead speed comes from a proper sequencing of movements throughout  the swing.  I am 175 pounds soaking wet and cant bench press 130 pounds but I carry my driver about 285.

  10. if your right handed then thhe right hand creates most power the left hand just directs the swing.

  11. You should listen to the advice of MBL he knows what he is talking about.  But to answer your question about the arms and just the arms?.....It's the leading arm. Left arm for righties and right arm for lefties.  No offense meant to anyone else, but that's a fact, and anyone who tells you different does not understand the golf swing.

  12. Power comes more from the right wrist uncocking properly...Jack Nicklaus said that the right hand applies the "Hit for Power"...Power comes from a good coil between the upper body and the lower body, and a wide swing arc... The left arm provides control, and the hinging of the right wrist creates power...But I wouldn't actually think of these things during a golf swing...

  13. the hand of God or Allah. Depending which way you swing

  14. Depends on what hand you are. In my case, I'm a righty and feel the most power on my right arm, so it likely means that for righties it's the right hand and for lefties, the left hand. It might vary by golfer, who knows... but that's just my case, not anyone else's.

  15. It depends on the type of swing the golfer has.  A right handed golfer may hit with their right hand  or pull with their left hand.  Can't really say if one is more powerful because many other factors like the pivot, tension etc come into play.

Check out TGM (The Golfing Machine) for a very detailed discription that may make your head explode (Hitters vs. Swingers).

  16. The hand that leads the swing is the power hand. For righties it is the left hand and for lefties it is the right hand (or the top hand of the grip) the bottom hand is for direction. If you roll it over you will hook the ball, or if you leave it under you will slice
