Who was the first artist to study and portray his own personality and feelings in a series of self-portraits?

  2. Durer definitely made some of the earliest identifiable formal self-portraits.  But it is believed that Jan van Eyck's "Portrait of a Man" is probably a self-portrait. Painted in 1433, it predates Durer's.  Though, I believe it is not until Rembrandt, some 200 years later, that we get dozens and dozens of self-portraits, spanning the artist's lifetime.  The emotional and descriptive depth of these self-portraits are often described as a kind of visual autobiography.
