  1. This is a very difficult question, as you can see from the former answers: it varies from person to person. This is why a wide exposure to a great variety of fields is generally encouraged.  You don't really know where a child's talents lie until you expose them to different subjects. Of course the basics of reading, writing and mathematics are essential to any field. But a child may not know he/she is a natural dancer, artist, scientist, etc, until exposed to those things and given the chance to try them.

Personally, my undergrad & graduate education in psychology has not only helped me when I was practicing, but has helped me in every aspect of life, in the sense of seeing things from the point of view of other people - giving me a greater sense of compassion for and deeper understanding of others.

  2. As a stay-at-home mom, the most significant lessons for me (so far) have been the "Reading, Writing and Arithmetic" lessons from grade school.

Times have changed so much and the educational systems are so different than what I grew up with, but when I'm checking my daughter's math or drilling her with her spelling words, I am able to teach her little things that help her out that she hasn't been taught in school (which makes me the wisest woman she knows, and that's always fun).

  3. I think it is important to be exposed to courses like art and any special skills the child is interested in because these can help the child understand their gifts.I found out I had talent in art in the seventh grade art class and art is my main interest in life as far as career. Before that no one ever told me I could do it.
