  1. The sony is the better buy because of the warranty that comes with it and the ease of use... my buddy has the yamaha and the controls confuse the c**p out of both of us, and we are both pretty big nerds.

  2. Home theater receivers are more about connectivity rather than pure sonic sound like for an audiophile music system.

I tend to agree that only the "ES" line of Sony is decent. And for Yamaha, the RX-V line is the higher end.

For about the same price, Check out the Onkyo TXSR605.  The step up model (705) is winning "Gear of the Year" and "Editors Choice" awards. 2 HDMI 1.3 inputs and tons of other features that you have to spend twice as much to get on other brands.

  3. Yamaha HTR-6060.

For Sony home audio, you should only consider their Elevated Standard (Sony ES) product line, which appears may be out of your price range with the lowest end ES receiver, the STR-DA3300ES, costing around $999 (but you might be able to get a better deal by shopping around).

Regular Sony audio does not compare, performance-wise.

  4. If you mean which ones delivers the better sound then you should listen to both and pick the one that sounds best to your ears. Being a Receiver, the sound may not be that different between  models..As far as the video processing goes, chose the one that meets your requirements. The trouble with Receivers is that the three sections, (Tuner section,  Pre-Amp/Processor section, and Power Amplifiers section, all use the one power supply which compromises the sound quality. The needs of the Power Amplifiers section, degrades the Pre-Amp section which is the heart of the system.

  5. Definitely the Yamaha between the two.  Other excellent choices are from Pioneer and Onkyo.
