  1. Try family owned and local bakeries - they tend to be fairly reasonably priced, produce good-quality baked goods and are least likely to have big waiting lists. I once had a small-ish sized cake made by a baker and it cost about $60, so if you're looking for something to feed a large party you're probably going to be quite limited.

Sounds like a crazy idea - but what about making your own?  You have much greater control of what you put into the cake, and can even personalise it far less expensively than what a bakery would charge for. Many bakers and confectioners also sell decorations: a firm favourite in my house has always been cakes with copies of photographs printed on sugar paper, which you can order to request. I refer to this excellent website with loads of pictures and instructions for fancy cake decorating: http://www.easy-birthday-cakes.com/

  2. I am a former chef and while a local bakery would be your first idea, there are people who do wedding cakes and specialty ones for baby showers and other occasions, check the Yellow Pages in your area for those type of busniesses, as for making it, you could but if your willing to pay for it, with in reason, then get a pro to do it, I did make wedding cakes and large party cakes, when working as a chef, not what I would have called the greatest, but I did learn from a friend who ran a cake decorating school/classes the techniques and could write with both icing and gel for special occasion cakes.

Look it up or talk to friends about who did there wedding cakes, chance are they do other types so you can see what is out there before commiting to a final idea.

  3. well, avoid anything on queen street west.  there is this place there called dufflet's and it is really disappointing.  have you tried it?  the cakes are all stodgy and not tasty at all.  their date bars are okay, but avoid the cakes.  they are also VERY expensive.  it's just queen street hype.

  4. Try San Remo on Royal York south of Evans or McCall's on Dundas near Kipling. McCall's made one of the cakes for Prince Charles and Diana when they got married.

  5. Dufflet Cakes. No contest.

  6. I agree. A local bakery is usually fair priced and can offer excellent quality treats. I recommend looking in a local paper (you can find one in a starbucks or a newstand) for suggestions on local bakeries.

  7. If you are in the west end of Toronto call McCalls Cakes on Dundas St. West...they are excellent.  If you are in the east end call Katie's Cakes which I believe is on O'Connor Ave...again excellent and actually not quite as expensive as McCalls.
