I am going to study in Clayton, Melbourne, Australia next year and am looking at ways for easy transfers of money to me from Singapore while I am there. However, I cannot find any banks that have a low amount of initial deposit. Those I found required at least $150K. Is there any that requires low deposit and low minimal sum to be maintained in the bank? Please help! Thanks in advance.

  1. I say HSBC.

You need a A$2,000 initial deposit, but you need not keep it in there afterwards.

It pays a decent interest rate if you do keep $2,000+ in the account.

  2. HSBC definitely has branches in Singapore. They are one of the largest and safest banking groups in the world, with a global presence and great for international banking needs.

I know they have at least 3 branches in Melbourne CBD alone.

You need SD$150,000 just to open an bank account in Singapore? What kind of bank account is that?!

  3. Well, if you are going to study in Monash Uni in Clayton and live around there, the bank they have is ANZ, National, Commonwealth.

I think ANZ and commonwealth has branch in Singapore or you can go with HSBC (HSBC has a branch in glen waverley - 15mins by bus from Clayton). That's the nearest HSBC branch from Clayton

Minimum deposit to open an account: you can get with AUD 50 also possible. Unless you are going to open some credit card account, it will require something more than that unless you are working there (part-time n legally)
